RT: The Life and Music of Richard Thompson Review

Look, I'm no Richard Thompson obsessive, I'm not an audiophile & I'm not a fan of box sets. All that aside, this is essential listening for Thompson admirers & fanatics alike. Where the "Watching The Dark" collection was designed for popular consumption---this one is for the fans.

If you have a tin ear & an attention span lasting longer than 30 seconds, you can't help but notice Richard Thompson is one of the finest and most versatile guitarists Rock ever produced. As a songwriter, he's up there with the idiosyncratic likes of Dylan, Tom Waits & Townes Van Zandt.

True, the book weighs more than the music & is written by a Fairport Convention devotee who has a tendency towards the trivial and pedantic. One gets the sense of an overexcited academic, who's note cards are out of order. Even the interview with Thompson is fairly unrevealing. Thompson mischeiviously pulls the carpet from under with the quote: "To give a definite explaination would spoil the fun". But you're not buying this for the book.

The music speaks for itself. The box is a generous trove of unreleased rarities both studio & live. There's also a free write in disc of others covering Thompson. Making it 6 discs in all.

Highlights certainly include, "Crazy Man Micheal", "Meet Me On The Ledge" & "Sloth"---all of which show their strenghts outside of Fairport Convention's musical anachronisms. Live versions of classics like "Calvary Cross", "Shoot Out The Lights" & "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" never disappoint. On the contrary, they go to show how jaw droppingly solid the songs are. Not to mention the performer.

But its the near out of print, live & lost material that will leave long time fans reeling. I'm talking about things like, "Ghosts In The Wind" & "Drowned Dog Black Night". Stunning workouts & guaranteed to raise the hair on your neck. On the flip side, the initmate acoustic rarities, "Josef Locke" & "Mrs. Rita" would only enhance any Thompson release.

As I said, I am not an audiophile. I wouldn't let sound quality stand in my way of enjoying the many pleasures of Robert Johnson or Charley Patton, not to mention the Harry Smith Folk Anthology. So yes, the sound quality is less than stellar on Thompson's home demos & ferocious but murky live recordings like, "Put It There Pal". But overall, the folks at Free Reed did a great job of dusting out the nooks & crannies.

In terms of the unreleased studio material, "Bad News Is All The Wind Can Carry" is as beautifully bleak as it gets. The fragment, "In Over Your Head" captures Thompson at his most vulnerable & questioning. Revealing to say the least. That's not to say that stuff like "Dragging The River", "Alexander Graham Bell" & "My Daddy Is A Mummy" aren't great infectious fun.

As for the covers disc highlighting Thompson's "1000 Years In Popluar Music"--- the likes of "Substitute" & "Tempted" are always welcome. Both are just as, if not more heartfelt than the originals. The conviction of his version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" serves only to mock his sarcastic stab at Britney Spears',"Oops! I Did It Again".

Great as Page, Beck, Hendrix, Clapton & Richards are---none have proved themselves to be as consistantly strong as Thompson in the songwriting department. The double threat Thompson so consitantly weilds often sets him apart.

Despite long standing critical acclaim, his low key personality, twisted sense of humor, and willingness to go to the "dark place" may have hampered him in terms of popular consumption. But Thompson's weathered through it all with his integrity intact. True, he always looked more like your High School History professor than a Byronic anti-hero. But perhaps, its Thompson's stubborn sense of "Englishness" that's kept him from American superstardom. Its something he makes no apology for & has never tried to bury. He has always remained loyal to his roots but has always dared venture far beyond the genre known as "Folk". So, look beyond the whims of fashion and find the unpretenious grit so many strive for. Its all here waiting for you.

i just want to say this CD is great. i'm so happy for brian/'head'. but definately even if i didn't know him from when i was a complete korn fan, i would have loved the lyrics and the transitions from hard to soft. i'm drawn to music that's.. strong.. but it needs to have something that i call the 'beautiful element' which this cd has for sure. my favorite tracks are Home, L.O.V.E, Re-Bel, Save Me From Myself and Washed By Blood. With 'Home', about 4 1/2 minutes into it is the best part i think. he really knows how to close up a track. the ends of many of the songs are my favorite. Re-Bel hits a sweet spot 2:40 into it and he closes that one with this like, mens choir and he sings over them "don't forget about the golden rule, love Me with all your heart. if you give Me just that one request, we will never be apart. your life it means so much to Me. you've been abused in every way. everyone on earth has let you down. now come try ME".. beautiful. Washed by Blood opens great and it's long and great and gets the best at the 8 minute mark where he speaks like God, which gave me goosebumps because of what he said. i'm really not a prisoner of my own life anymore. i am washed by blood and have been given a new start. and you're given a beautiful mental image when he sings "come fly away with me.. you know i love you" he has a beautiful voice when he's not trying to be grungy. thanks all for sitting with me as i gave my play by play of my favorite tracks. hope this helps someone. and if not, just go ahead and read another one then! =}

10 ways to discover new music

It is often difficult to discover new music. I listen to music all the time, at home, at work in the car, sometimes even help you sleep. But without the ability to find new music that I would soon get bored of the same old play lists. I tried several approaches over the years to expand my musical tastes, so hopefully some of these may be useful to someone else.

1) BBC iPlayer radio

Now I'm not a big fan of everything played on mainstream radioStations, including the BBC, but I like the BBC iPlayer Radio. Annoyingly, the BBC seems to be the custom, by all-American show on a Stupids hours of the day when nobody listens, but with the iPlayer, you can simply choose any of these shows last 7 days, and once you feels on your PC.

2) What's new Music Store

I find my local music store rather boring at times, but does not stop me to check on footThe new releases, recommendations and staff will be. You can only a handful of CDs in them at a time, but every couple of weeks, I stood, a shovel, a copy of the CD, and stroll through a listening post to my selection checked.

3) Last.fm

There are many social sites on music, but I think that the use of Last.fm. did a simple plug-in for iTunes lets you listen to music I have on my PC and iPod, and upload the data for monitoring Last.fmWebsite. It 'very interesting to see some statistics on your listening habits, but it's best feature is the ability to see the listening habits of people who were statistically similar to you. You can browse your neighbors music, looking for bands who hears them, but you do not know, and then try to even listen to songs by them with the integrated music player.

4) Pandora.com

Pandora is an automated musicReferral service that asks for a band or a track that allows you to enjoy, and build a radio station with similar music to listen to you. Pandora I was imprisoned for nearly a year until the service is, unfortunately, is only available in the United States, although many services similar to those appearing including One Llama.

5) concerts

Going to a band you love live is fantastic to see, but it is often easy to underestimate the support band too. Support bands are usuallyand coming local bands or not function normally, so they are a good source of new sounds.

6) Take a music magazine

I confess that I do not often buy music magazines when I read the article is a waste of time. It may seem little, but I often want to take in stores a copy of Kerrang and NME, and then switch to new versions, a quick read and then send it to the rack. I make a mental note of the bands, and find it laterInternet, when I get home.

7) iTunes

I often use the search iTunes Store and listen to samples of bands that I have examined, such as those found on Last.fm! One can only have the opportunity to listen to short samples, but iTunes is great, which means they have a good chance of finding what you are searching for. Once in a blue moon I can buy with the store, because I'm damn impatient, and can not wait for a CD is delivered.

8)Magnatune

I discovered Magnatune to work, where I have a Ubuntu-based Linux box for my daily tasks. The latest version of Rhythmbox which comes with the operating system has been integrated with the service Magnatune. Magnatune lets you listen to all the music you want, including gratuities and buy songs with a pay "what it considers fair" system. The music is not very mainstream, but the choice to play some pieces and leads me to randomentertained.

9) Put your MP3 player on Random

I have a large collection of MP3s that would span end to end play as many weeks. It is very easy to find, you have music that you hear little or never. Put the player on random, it can often help to rediscover the hidden treasure.

10) Ask your friends

Do not have your friends or colleagues to estimate, even if they seem to have lame taste in music. And 'well, their interest in hiring people what the othercan be heard, as he helps us to diversify your listening habits, and something that you feel is not usually discovered.

How to read music

Able to read music is as it seems difficult and complex as can be studied with any new concept, but when we put out efforts to make at least the basics of reading music, notes intricate sense at last.

The first thing is to know the staff. The staff is composed of five lines and four spaces are formed, these spaces and the lines are, where we will record our notes. The first symbol is written on the staff: theClef. The two most commonly used keys are the treble clef, also known as G-key and the bass clef, also known as F-key.

The G-key for most of the items used most of the music and stringed instruments, woodwind and brass high, while the key to a step down to lower instruments used.

The icon of the day bears the signature of time. The number above the signature determines the number of beats in a measure - a measure the space between two bars orvertical lines of the staff, now the number of funds is determined in a time of signature, what kind of note gets a beat.

For example, if the number of first three, then, that three shots are the measure. If the number of fund is four, so the quarter note receives one count.

The third point is the notes and rests. This is one of the most important parts of learning to read like notes, and you need to become familiar with various types and values of the notes. We note all l ', all the note with a bar that is attached to the note a half, half note with a filled circle as a quarter note, quarter note with a tail is eighth, while the fourth piece of paper with the deque is a sixteenth.

This is a wonderful album - I really enjoyed the melody that is used throughout the album, as it is incorporated in a way that does not become too repetitive. The album comes to a nice close with the waterfall element, and is truly a standout piece of relaxation music. Something about the melody in this album reminds me of some Yanni tracks, except more soothing and with a more appealing instrumentation. This is a superb album that I consider one of Llewellyn's most melodic.

This disc is clearly made from a near-sacred mission to redeem Haiti and its vodou culture. During slavery days, Jacob Boukman, who was shipped from Jamaica to Haiti, created vodou out of the elements common to the slaves' various tribal origins. Vodou's potpourri of spirit, rhythm, and melody is, indeed, every bit as rapturous as its ideal of human community. Lolo Beabrun, lead singer of Boukman Eksperyans (who turn in two tracks here) has said that so many vodou rhythms are played in tiny villages secreted in Haiti's mountainous interior that they are unknown to outsiders, and they are indistinguishable from their African origins. Rapture covers this infinite world of Haitian-African rhythm, ranging from the determinedly rootsy to those who take vodou drumming as a base and cut loose, making free with elements of jazz, rock, reggae, and Latin music. The Disco Years, Vol. 5: Must Be the Music

The Disco Years, Vol. 5: Must Be the Music Review

I have already written reviews for Volumes 1-4 of this series. I gave Volume 1 (which contained music from the beginning of the disco era) 5 stars because it was the best collection so far with only one "dud" track. Volume 2 (with music from the end of the disco era) received 4 stars because although it contained some great songs, it also contained 5 "dud"s. Volume 3 also received 4 stars because even though it only contained 1 "dud", it was all over the place and did not have a unifying theme. Volume 4 received 4 stars because it had a great theme (Chic and Chic-inspired music) but it contained at least 4 "dud"s.

Now we come to Volume 5. Another mess. If there were a theme to this CD, it would be the "Disco Diva" since 14 of 18 tracks are sung or performed by female vocalists. However, once again there are many songs that just don't belong here. Here is a track by track review:

1. Shame by Evelyn "Champagne" King
2. Star Love by Cheryl Lynn
3. Honeybee by Gloria Gaynor:

These first 3 tracks are awesome by some of the best Disco Divas of the time. What a shame that their careers were cut short by the fact that they were labled disco singers and had a hard time finding success after disco died.

4. I'm on Fire by 5000 Volts: This song climed to #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. As Randy Jackson would say, this song is "just a-ight".

5. I Feel Love by Donna Summer: The Queen of Disco and often cited as the best song of the disco era.

6. Boogie Woogie Dancin Shoes by Claudja Barry: Another Disco Diva, not as good as the other Disco Divas represented here, but once again, "just a-ight".

7. Automatic Lover by Dee D. Jackson: The first true "dud" of this CD. Many disco songs tried to jump on the "Star Wars" band wagon with varying degrees of success ("Star Love" above being a success, "Automatic Lover" being a failure)

8. Boogie Motion by Beautiful Bend: Not a bad song, but fairly forgettable. Sounds like a generic disco song that they would use as background music on a 70's TV show like "Charlie's Angels".

9. Boogie Nights by Heatwave: The first song on the CD not to feature female vocals. However, it is such a classic, funky tune that it's inclusion is totally acceptable. It also emphasizes the difference between this song and the previous track. This song has real spark which the previous song lacks.

10. HAPPY Radio by Edwin Starr: Edwin must have been the original model for Madonna, since he kept changing his career to fit the times. He started in the mid-60's as an R&B crooner, then in the early 70's he turned political with his anti-war songs, then by the late 70's he had jumped on the disco bandwagon. This song was the follow-up to the far superior "Contact".

11. Must be the Music by Secret Weapon: Early attempt at fusing rap and disco, it succeeds at neither.

12. Upside Down by Diana Ross: We now return to the Disco Diva portion of our program, and what a way to return. Diana's best work has to be this album produced by Chic.

13. Feelin Lucky Lately by High Fashion: Created by the same people behind the studio group Change, and it shows. And, as with Change, the Chic influence also shows through. Not a bad song, and good strong female vocals.

These 3 songs are very good, but they are technically not disco. They are mid-80's dance/techno/new wave hybrids. They belong on a collection of the history of mid-80's dance music, not on a disco collection. I like the songs, but as a purist, I just don't feel like they belong here.

18. Mindless Boogie by Hot Chocolate: After a CD filled with mostly Disco Divas (except for tracks 9, 10 & 11), we end the CD back with a male vocal. Now, I like Hot Chocolate, but this is not one of their better tunes and this song kind of ends the CD on a downer note. Not the way I would have wound up this volume.

So, I recommend this CD for some of the killer disco tracks, but as usual, there are some "dud"s that could have been left off or replaced by better tunes.

Gold DVD !! Neil Young is such an extraordinary charismatic and versatile musician. I wanted to see him acoustic and here we go - here we listen to his old acoustic guitar (he keeps only old instruments) and new songs (on top of several classics). They are simple but touching. Are the songs country music? - not in my opinion, though some may be close. I love his dry sense of humor, every word about his life whether he speaks or sings. Great movie and performance!

"I just want to play well, share the stage with my friends, give the best I can," says Neil Young before the concert that is the centerpiece of Heart of Gold. No problem, dude. Working with filmmaker Jonathan Demme, Young has come up with a gem--not all flash and bling-bling, but as understated as a single pearl, musically restrained yet emotionally open. Of course, neither Demme (an Oscar winner for The Silence of the Lambs; he also helmed Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense) nor Young would call it "a concert film"; the director describes it as "a dream concert, something that's literally being dreamt by Neil," while the singer-songwriter himself calls it "a multi-level story." He and his band (which, with the addition of horns, strings, and backup singers, including Emmylou Harris, occasionally numbers forty or more musicians) perform Prairie Wind in its entirety, and there is some deeply moving, highly personal material here; in addition to the gospel-tinged "When God Made Me" and the dirge-like "No Wonder," Young sings about his recently-deceased father (the title song), his newly adult daughter ("Here for You"), the guitar he plays that once belonged to Hank Williams ("This Old Guitar"), and even his dog ("He Was the King"). Demme's direction is ideal for conveying the music's restrained acoustic textures, rich backing vocals, and simple, elegant melodies. Shots are held much longer than is usual in such films, and while there are lots of close-ups, there are no gimmicks. This superb DVD package is filled out by a second disc of bonus features, including a variety of featurettes and a solo performance of "The Needle and the Damage Done" from The Johnny Cash Show in 1971. --Sam Graham

Sheet Music Theory - Simple and Compound Time Signatures

After learning of music theory as simple as the different types of notes, and employing staff, and key symbols of the signature of time are ready to continue to be getting to know the different kinds of time in music, too. Just place the three types are times simple, compound and irregular. Easy Time is the most easily identifiable.

In simple time, the number on the top is always a 2.3 or 4 indicates that it will be that many beats per measure. This isstraight forward and easy to learn beginning music students makes it a good choice for beginner bands. The next type of time, the connection is also relatively easy to distinguish. It 'a number that is greater than four, but at the same time, it must be divisible by three.

If you check the connection time, you will notice that the notes are usually grouped into groups of three. An example can be found in 6 / 8, where two groups of three eighthseach. You will also find many different combinations of these. Perhaps you can find two quarters and two eighths in a bar or you can find two dotted quarter notes. You can also use a dotted half note.

While this may seem relatively easy, in and of itself can be a bit 'difficult. If you're just counting the beats in slow music is pretty easy. Faster music can be much more difficult, though. It 'much easier, only the eighth-groups includeas if they were just a big beat. This means that, written in a piece in fast-moving notes in 6 / 8 time it would be two separate pulses.

In 12 / 8 time you will find a total of four groups. This means that there were four dotted quarter notes per bar. In 9 / 8, you will find three groupsthree eighths, are represented by three dotted quarter notes per bar.

The last type of time period is irregular. The number will always be higher than four, but can not divisible by three. Some examples of irregular signatures includes 7 / 4 and 5 / 8. Note that the numbers are significantly higher than both the first four, but three did not have parts in it.

Music: The Beginning of Rock and Roll For Me - (1955)

In 1950, televisions affordable only for the privileged, so that my family could not afford, and we listened to the radio. My uncle had a television in his house, and when we see the children for the first time a TV for the first time, we were afraid of him! Hey, we were 10-12 years, and there were few television sets around the country! We wondered how could all those small numbers in a small box will receive! At the end of 1950 my father bought a television, and we have seen shows like Lucy, the honeymoon, My Little Margie, "Leave It to Beaver, Ozzie and Harriet, 77 Sunset Strip, Life of Riley, Flash Gordon, the millionaire Ed Sullivan, Gun Smoke, television, etc. was new to everyone in the country. But there was a TV show, which is a must for our to-do list ... was, and the show was American Bandstand! In the social center along the road from where we lived, we went to dances (sock-hops) every week! Everyone had revealed, including "Long Tall Sally, Peggy Sue, Nadine, and all of us" Splish-Splash in the nightway! There was only one "type" of dance, the favorite was in progress at the moment ... "Band-standing", which was similar to jitter interceptions! Everybody On the Third Day, we learned from watching the dancers on the show!

It 'been exciting to get out of school for three hour in the afternoon ... I ran home ... so you can see all the new stars of American Bandstand! One after another ... all the biggies of rock and roll was the show! Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, ConnieFrancis, the Platters, the Drifters, Chuck Berry, The Coasters, Fats Domino, Elvis-some have called someone or other ... and that was the list is endless! There were, of course, not oldies right now ... how these singers, songs, songwriters and performers, the most important ingredients for the beginning of the era of rock and roll!

But rock and roll, as he had no time by all! In fact, it was down right hated! Parents, schools, government, churches, and"Establishment", wrinkling her forehead on the rock and roll from the start! "Rock and roll was corrupting our children." .. Was the cry! Some songs were banned by the Church, and Creation "in rock and roll frowned. E 'was the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, who topped the charts. And the Monkees were one of the few groups that contend the Beatles at the end of 1960, its popularity!

As children, we could not afford (45 laps), but we had a friend in the street, whose parents bought her daughter, records, and we went there all the time about the latest hits boogie! I learned to take the waxthe dance floor at a young age! In the early 1960s, dancing partner split apart, and danced on your own! At that time the dance was a soup, "and in 2006, the stock is still present, is only called by another name!

American Music Awards: In 1960 and '70, I loved the American Music Awards, as all the "biggies result," the way in rock and roll. Gladys Knight, Linda Ronstadt, John Denver, Barbara Strisand, Peter,Paul and Mary, The Jackson Five, Bobby Darin, the carpenter, Three Dog Night, The Moody Blues, Fleetwood Mac, The Bee-Gees, Neil Diamond, CCR, Herman's Hermits, The Dave Clark Five, and so on and so forth ! Even Bill Cosby had a hit in the late '60s with "The old man"!

Woodstock? A big orgy ... If you want to orgy! A big pajama party love and drugs ... More than 500,000 people in New York! It 'been a time of free love, drugs and alcohol. As the song says ... everyonestoned ... There has been a member of the famous musical group, said: "If in the 60s ... you wern't there!" Well ... I say this dope head ... I remember the 60, because I was there!

And 1960 were violent and turbulent times ... not only because of Viet Nam, but because the '60s were a time of change in America! The civil rights movement, the emancipation of women, equal rights for all. Civil disobedience, rebellion, City ... burned during what is known at the time, "the long hot summer? L 'Congress did not get it ... The United States of America has been and is not a government of the Congress ... or a government of Republicans ... Democrats or the government ... And 'the Government of the People's Republic THE UNITED STATES AND ... Cities were burning, so as to bring the message of heads in Congress to DOPE ... Cities burned every year until CONGRESS got the message! After Watergate, in the early 1970s, the drug leaders in Congress last message ... now ... PROPERTY of AmericaAGAIN people ... where to stay there forever!

At this point I do not think it was a big city in America, where the National Guard, not because of the rebellion of tears! Here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the National Guard in 1971, was named after the three students killed at Kent State National Guard. The fires were set at the University of New Mexico in protest of Vietnam and the Kent State killings!

And the music reflects the time ofMood of the country! Hundreds of protest songs were written and recorded, and many of these songs are popular even today. (2006) There was a time, "Do Your Own Thing", independent thinking ... free and the "establishment" But to put the music!

I would say that around 1970, rock and roll has begun to change. On one side was "a heavy metal sound, not listening to me and go in a different direction was the so-called" disco! "Over the years, peoplelabels set to music, and to this day in 2006, I have no idea of what constitutes "hard"! The only thing I say disco, my wife and I saw the movie "Grease" in 1970, and we loved the music! The film became a Depp ... but the music was great!

Sorry ... Rick Nelson, Bobby Darin, Eddie Rabbit, John Denver, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison: Mama Cass Eliot, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, Janice Joplin, Roger Miller and of course ... the "king" ... all dead, soyoung!

One of the most ironic things that happened to me in the mid-1990 with the Rolling Stones in Albuquerque, NM appeared (where I live) you may remember, back when rock and roll began to hate their parents and the establishment "means the music, was 1995, and took a computer course at a school in the local community, and the stones were in town. The community college was located near the football stadium, where the stones have been met.

That night I had to Class 6:30 through the evening before the Stones show, and as I waited at a traffic light turns green, I saw 40 to 50 years for parents to enroll their children in a Stones concert! One can imagine that? What a difference a generation ago! Back in the hated 1950 / 60's rock and roll parents, and these children now bring their children to a rock and roll ... UNBELIEVABLE!

In 2006, oldies music dominate the airwaves, at least where I live. And> Music will continue to dominate, because the music and the lyrics are so great ... They never die! I never heard too much about new music, much more! Oh ... well ... as the song says ... Rock and Roll is here to stay ... if the songs are the oldies or new songs to be together!

I have always admired the musicians ... those who write a song ... can sing a song ... and play a musical instrument! As for me ... the only instrument that can play ... It's the radio ... and Ialso do well at all!

During the many years of this explosion of music for me, I can not forget one of my favorite bands in time ... the Chipmunks ... Theodore, Alvin and Simon ... ........ ... ALVIN ......

As We Speak David Sanborn Jazz Music CD Review

Not sure what happened to me in this matter, but it seems that the more I feel better "As We Speak. As We Speak" is simply put one of the best CD David Sanborn is in progress.

It 'a rare day that I have a CD from an artist that I can honestly say, is a black run in groups to obtain. I am more than happy to announce that's exactly what I have to say about it. Simply is not evil in the pile. No fillers here at all.

Jazz lovers arerecognize some of the known participants in the project, including Bill Evans and Marcus Miller and some other celebrities.

As We Speak "is a CD that offers superb buy something for everyone. I give my highest recommendation. It 'easy to hear only great. A must if you're even a little' in jazz.

While the entire CD is outstanding some of my favorite songs 1 - Port of Call, track 7 - Straight To The Heart, and track 9 - Love Will ComeSomeday

My Bonus Pick, and those who Sore [... as in 'Stuck On Repeat "] is track 4 - Over And Over. Great track!

It mainly features Steve Perry on lead vocals, Neal Schon on lead guitar, Jonathan Cain on Keyboards & vocals, Ross Valory on bass, Steve Smith on drums, Gregg Rolie on keyboards & vocals & Aynsley on drums. You do get around 4 live performances with Randy Jackson (the American Idol Judge) playing the bass guitar, and he is good. I've seen Journey perform live before, and they are a great live band. This dvd is great for any Journey fan or any Rock & Roll fan period. I like it and I recommend it. Thanks!!!!

It will be many years before Journey's music will be known as anything but soupy '70s arena rock and embarrassingly overwrought '80s pop. But that day will come: the songs and the playing are just too good for the scorn and ridicule to endure forever. Journey: Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997 will do little, however, to hasten the band's salvation. In fact, if it weren't such a gift to those who love the music, a case could be made for suppressing the disc's video content, so unimaginative is most of the directing and so damning is the attire (or lack thereof).

But even if sweaty guys running around in tight jeans and no underwear isn't really your thing, the disc has its treats. There's MTV nostalgia, pure and simple--"Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," with its mimed quayside performance and strutting high-heeled model, is perhaps the quintessential "What were they thinking?" video. We also get exciting glimpses of the early band (with keyboardist Gregg Rolie passing the lead-vocal torch to newcomer Steve Perry) kicking out classics like "Feeling That Way," "Lights," and "Just the Same Way." Many of the songs feature live audio as well as video, and it's here, most notably in "Who's Crying Now" and "Stone in Love," that lead guitarist Neal Schon cuts loose with some extended licks. An unexpected pleasure is 1996's heartfelt ballad "When You Love a Woman." The guys are aging gracefully, Steve Smith's drumming is better than ever, and the video itself boasts the most tasteful production of the bunch. --Michael Mikesell
